SOCRadar Tracks NetScaler C2 Framework Automating CVE-2026-88771 Mass Exploitation

SOCRadar maps an autonomous NetScaler C2 kit that FOFA-hunts Citrix appliances, injects CVE-2026-88771 log payloads, and drops a polling agent at /tmp/.nsagent for mass exploitation.

SINGAPORE - SOCRadar's Threat Research Unit describes an autonomous command-and-control kit, NetScaler C2, built to find internet-facing Citrix NetScaler ADC and Gateway appliances, confirm builds vulnerable to CVE-2026-88771, and inject unauthenticated log payloads that later execute as root. In an Oct. 7, 2026 analysis, the team says Citrix disclosed the improper input validation flaw on Sept. 27 with a CVSSv4 score of 9.5 after confirming in-the-wild use. Attacker-controlled text from login fields and User-Agent headers is written into ns.log without sanitization. A background daemon, admautoregd, later greps for lines matching pitboss and PPE unexpectedly died, then processes the token through shell utilities, so a crafted username can run with root privileges. SOCRadar notes injection may wait up to 24 hours for the daemon cycle or an appliance reboot, and that payloads must stay under about 93 bytes inside the username field while avoiding several shell-significant characters.

The kit is modular. A bash orchestrator, run.sh, launches a C2 listener and a 30-minute pipeline loop: targets.py pulls FOFA results across 12 queries that can surface up to 120,000 candidate hosts; probe.py fingerprints reachable appliances and keeps builds before the fixed NetScaler lines; exploit.py fires two payload variants across 11 unauthenticated HTTP endpoints; pollctl.py gives operators bot reporting and remote shells. Successful HTTP bootstraps curl a script from 45.143.130.195 on port 8899, drop an agent at /tmp/.nsagent, register hostname and username, and poll /c/ about every 20 seconds while returning hex-encoded results on /r/. A DNS path on port 53 only confirms execution when HTTP egress tools are missing. Code comments and UI strings in Simplified Chinese, plus extensive commentary in run.sh, lead SOCRadar to assess a Chinese-speaking operator and AI-assisted development. The researchers say they did not recover a live C2 instance, so they could not count confirmed infections, but the architecture is built for mass exploitation rather than a single targeted break-in.

For SOC teams, the write-up is a hunt brief as much as a vulnerability note. Search ns.log archives for pitboss NSPPE markers, /s/ pipe-to-shell fragments, and the C2 address; inspect /tmp for .nsagent; review processes for unexpected shells; and watch proxy logs for the /s/, /a/, /p/, /c/, and /r/ paths. Isolate unpatched appliances, upgrade to Citrix fixed builds (including later SAML-related CVE-2026-88779 releases where applicable), and rebuild from clean images if compromise indicators appear, because patching alone does not remove attacker artifacts.
